My love affair rekindled on July 1st. I had been in love, but some of the thrill was gone. I took things for granted a little. Then I saw her-Michelle Obama speaking at the American School Counselor Association conference. As I listened, I knew there was only one thing to do. I began to write and prepare for this blog. I began to research the universities in my great state of Michigan. I currently have over 20 drafts saved to this site building toward a launch in September. Each revision and addition to one of the drafts creates excitement and invigorates me to make each draft better. Each response from an admissions office helps me see what unique and special higher education we offer in Michigan. I remember the thrill of undergraduate education full of possibility and promise. The creation of an adult self and an understanding and appreciation of differences in others. Questioning common beliefs in order to change them or to firmly understand the reason I believed. As I create each blog, I feel like an extension of the public relations arm of each school as I think about presenting this information to my students. The character and personality of the school shines through and makes me want to experience its unique perspective. As I gather information on the colleges and universities in Michigan, I am finding myself falling in love again. Falling in love with ideas. Falling in love with the mission of higher education. Falling in love with the look of various schools. Falling in love with the passion for a place. Falling in love with possibility for the future. I want to become a vet, build and race a solar car, reinvent educational buildings, become a pilot, manage a golf course, learn about volcanoes to protect nearby cities, research medical breakthroughs and build a chariot. I admit as I did this research, it makes me want to go back to school. I also can clearly realize how difficult it would be to make this decision to choose only one school. The world is waiting for our students to reinvent America. I can't wait to see what happens. |
