Admission FAQ's
The Director of Admissions, Amanda Slenski responded to my questions about college in general and Alma in particular in the following way:
1. Describe your institution and what type of student is the best fit.
Alma College is a small, private, liberal arts and sciences institution whose mission is to prepare graduates who think critically, serve generously, lead purposefully, and live responsibly as stewards of the world they bequeath to future generations. We offer a personalized education with multiple paths and experiences leading to success. We don’t prescribe a formula for our students. A student's Alma experience will include opportunities to put the ideas and theories that are discussed in the classroom to work in real world settings through internships, research fellowships, campus leadership, academic travel and/or service to others. At Alma, we also offer a four-year graduation promise, the Alma Commitment, and a pledge that each interested student can participate in an experiential learning opportunity, such as an internship, research fellowship, or study abroad, backed by $2,500 in Alma Venture funding from the college. You can find even more information about us on our website, www.alma.edu. The students that are the best fit for Alma are ones that are excited about learning and want to be involved in creating their college experience. We are very active in travel and service on campus and so students who share similar passions truly thrive here.
2. What are your admission requirements?
To be considered for admission, high school students should have:
- Approximately a “B” average or higher
- A composite score of 22 or a combined SAT (Critical Reading, Math and Writing) score of 1530
- Made progress toward a total of 16 academic units which must include a minimum of four year of English, three years of mathematics, three years of social studies and three years of science.
Students who do not meet these requirements are considered individually for admission. All applicants are considered on the basis of their academic and test records.
3. Why is post-secondary training important?
To be successful in today's global environment students need to learn to think critically, live responsibly, and lead purposefully. Having these characteristics along with the well rounded education provided by a liberal arts education prepares our students to be successful now and in the future as a part of the ever changing world that surrounds us.
4. As the parent of a middle school student, what steps can I take now to help my child succeed in the future?
The biggest thing that parents can do to help foster their student's future success is to support them in their exploration of both future careers and college choices.
Thank you, Ms. Slenski for the input and information!
