Life in Houghton
I am unaware of a graduate from M.T.U. on our staff, so there is no quote from Whitehall employees.
I will say that as a school counselor, I have had a very favorable opinion of Tech as I worked with them on this blog. The admissions office (and Allison in particular) have been professional, friendly, prompt and always gave a bit more than expected. I received a handwritten thank you for showing an interest in the university and an offer to partner with them on STEM projects. I intend to find a perfect way to take them up on that! Thank you to all who made this middle school counselor feel welcomed and valued at M.T.U. There is crazy smart energy in Houghton.
Admissions questions for this blog were answered by Allison Carter, Director of Admissions, Michigan Technological University.
1. Describe your institution and what type of student is the "best fit."
"Michigan Technological University is a place where crazy smart is a way of life. Our students are bright, motivated, and adventurous. They come to our campus in Houghton, Michigan (in the Upper Peninsula) eager to learn and create the future. While many of our majors focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), majors and minors are available in over 130 degree areas. Our residential campus of nearly 7,000 students is the perfect environment for hard-working students interested in a residential campus experience at one of the safest colleges in the country."
2. What are your admission Requirements?
"It's free to apply to Michigan Tech. Students must submit an official high school transcript and official ACT or SAT scores. Applications are accepted any time after junior-year grades are complete. On average, incoming first-year students to Michigan Tech have a 3.66 cumulative GPA and a 26.7 ACT composite. Admissions requirements vary by the major you plan to enroll in--contact the Admissions Office for information."
3. Why is post-secondary training important?
"Post-secondary education is a gateway to greater career opportunities and higher annual income. Michigan Tech provides students with valuable experiences that give our graduates an advantage--access to labs and equipment early, undergraduate research experiences, international opportunities, and industry-sponsored group project work. Coupled with opportunities for co-ops, internships, and accelerated master's degrees, your Michigan Tech experience can open doors you didn't even know existed. Our students graduate with a 92% placement rate and the 10th highest starting salaries in the country among public universities--the average starting salary for our undergraduates is $59,200."
4. As the parent of a middle school student, what steps can I take now to help my child succeed in the future?
"It's never too early to start learning more about colleges. Visit campuses and take a tour. Talk with current students, faculty, and staff. Start saving for college now and encourage your student to do the same. Also explore summer programs for students. Michigan Tech offers extensive Summer Youth Programs for students in grades 6-11. Each exploration is a week-long opportunity to learn about different careers and experience college life by living on campus, taking courses, working on projects, and having fun with students from across the world. Some programs for students in grades 10-11 are covered by full scholarships--the only cost to the family is transportation to and from campus."
